FLOPPY-BRIMMED ROSE HATS*
SIZE: Medium.
MATERIALS: Knitting worsted, 1 4-oz skein white (W), 1 s-oz skein each of
green (G) and rose (R); few yards of black, light red and dark red. Crochet hook
size G.
GAUGE: 4 sc = 1" (be sure to get gauge; change hook if necessary); 9
rnds = 2".
Note: Directions are for hat with dark rose flowers. Any changes for
hat with light rose flowers will be given separately.
HAT: Beg at center top, with W, ch 4. Sl st in first ch to form
ring.
RND 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Sl st in first sc, ch 1.
RND 2: 2 sc in each sc around. Join each rnd with sl st in first
sc; ch 1.
RND 3: Sc in first sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) 5 times, 2 sc in
last sc.
RND 4: 2 sc in first sc, (sc in each of 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times,
sc in each of last 2 sc - 24 sc.
RND 5: Sc in each of first 3 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3
sc) 5 times, 2 sc in last sc - 30 sc.
RNDS 6-14: Continue to inc 6 sc each rnd; do not work incs in incs of
previous rnd - 84 sc.
RND 15: Work even.
Pattern Notes: When changing colors, work last sc of one
color until there are 2 lps on hook, drop color, pull lp of new color through 2
lps on hook to finish sc. Add and cut pattern colors each rnd, working
over ends to hide them; do not cut W. When W is not being used, lay it
along top of work and work over it.
RND 16: Work even on 84 sc, working 35 W, 2 G, 3 W, 2 G, 3 W, 1 G,
finish rnd with W.
RND 17: Work 30 W, 3 R, 2 W, I G, 4 W, 3 G, 1 W, 3 R, 5 W, 3 G, finish
with W.

HAT WITH LIGHT ROSE FLOWERS: Work as for first hat
through rnd 3.
RND 4: Work as for first hat working in back lp only of each st - 24 sc.
RNDS 5-29: Work as for first hat, working * sc in both lps of 1 st, sc in
back lp only of next st, repeat from * throughout for st pattern. At inc
sts, work both sts the same in 1 st.
BRIM:
RND 1: Work as for first hat (in front lp only of each st).
RNDS 2-7: Working st pattern as before (sc in both lps of 1 st, sc in
back lp only of next st), work rose pattern as for first hat.
RNDS 8-12: Working with W only and keeping to st pattern, inc 6 sts each
rnd.
RND 13: Working in both lps, work hdc in each st around. Join; end
off.
*I have to say that I like these hats much better without the rose pattern... plus, it's a lot easier to do. I'll post a picture of a rose-less hat soon.
