SHOULDER BAG
SIZE: 10" wide, 8" deep..
MATERIALS: Cable cord*, about 1/16" diameter, 250 yards or 4 balls
(66 2/3 yards per ball). Crochet hook size F. Natural denim, ¼ yard for
lining.
GAUGE: 9 sts = 2"
BAG:
FRONT: Beg at lower edge, ch 47.
ROW 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, hdc in next ch, repeat
from * across. Ch 2, turn each row.
ROW 2: Hdc in first hdc, hdc in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in next
ch-1 sp, repeat from * across, hdc in last hdc.
ROW 3: Hdc in first hdc, * ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in nxt ch-1 sp, repeat
from * across, end ch 1, sk next hdc, hdc in last hdc.
ROW 4: Repeat row 2.
ROW 5: Dc in each of first 2 hdc, (dc in next sp, dc in next hdc) 3
times, * ch 5, sk next 5 sts, dc in next hdc, (dc in next sp, dc in next hdc) 3
times, repeat from * twice, dc in last hdc.
ROW 6: Dc in each of 2 dc, * ch 1, sk 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1, sk 2
dc, dc in next dc, ch 5, sk 5 ch, dc in next dc, repeat from * twice, ch 1, sk 2
dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1, sk 2 dc, dc in last 2 dc.
ROW 7: Dc in first 2 dc, * ch 2; holding back on hook last lp of each dc,
dc in each of next 3 dc, yo and through all 4 lps on hook, ch 2, dc in next dc,
ch 2, sc around both ch-5 lps below, ch 2, dc in next dc, repeat from * twice,
ch 2, 3-dc cluster as before over next 3 dc, ch 2, dc in ech of last 2 dc.
ROW 8: Dc in first 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in cluster, 2 dc in ch-2 sp,
dc in next dc, * ch 5, dc in next dc, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in cluster, 2 dc in
ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, repeat from * twice, dc in last dc.
ROW 9: Hdc in first dc, * (ch 1, sk 1 dc, hdc in next dc) 3 times, ch 1,
sk 1 st, hdc in ch-5 sp (ch 1, hdc in same sp) twice, repeat from * across, end
(ch 1, sk 1 dc, hdc in next dc) 4 times.
ROW 10: Repeat row 2.
ROWS 11-22: Repeat rows 5-10 twice.
ROW 23: Repeat row 3.
ROW 24: Sl st in each st across. End off.
BACK: Work as for front through row 23.
ROWS 24-34: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately, ending repeat row 2.
ROW 35: Sk first hdc, hdc in next dc, hdc in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, hdc in next
ch-1 sp, repeat from * across, end hdc in last ch-1 sp, hdc in next dc. Do
not work in last st.
ROWS 36 and 37: Repeat row 35. End off.
FINISHING: Block both pieces; let dry. Using front
as pattern, cut 2 pieces of lining fabric 1" larger all around than
front. Stitch pieces tog around side and bottom, taking 3/8" seams;
leave top open. Set aside.
Edging: From right side, beg at top edge of front, sc down side of front,
working 1 sc in edge of each hdc row and 2 sc in each dc row, to bottom, sc in
each st across starting ch, sc along other side edge to top. (Lower corners
should turn under slightly.) Ch 1, turn. work another row of sc, working
sc in each sc. End off.
From right side, beg in side edge of back in row that
corresponds to beg of front edging, work around back in same way as front;
continue around flap to beg of rnd, sl st in first sc. End off.
Turn. Sc in each sc around sides and bottom of back only to correspond to
front; do not work on flap. End off.
From right side, holding front and back wrong sides tog, sc
front and back tog working through corresponding sc. End off.
To block edging, fold a towel to just fit inside bag.
Place a damp cloth over edge, gently press with iron set for cotton, rounding
out corners.
Strap: For strap 34" long, ch 157, work row 1 of front across ch.
Ch 1, turn. Sl st in back lp of each hdc and in each ch-1 sp. End
off. Beg at other end, sl stin in each ch of starting ch. Press. Sew
ends to sides of bag between flap and front.
Button: Ch 6, sl st in first ch to form ring.
RND 1: Ch1, 2 sc in each ch.
RND 2: Sc in each sc.
RND 3: (Pull up a lp in each of next 2 sc, yo and through 3 lps on hook)
6 times. Stuff button with cord or cotton ball. Cut cord leaving
6" end. Thread end in yard needle, weave last 6 sts tog. Sew
button to center front.
Loop: Ch 12, 3 sc in first ch. End off. Sew 3 sc to center
edge of flap.
Insert lining. Turn under seam allowance around top
edge. Sew in place with strong thread. Flap is not lined.
*I used Aunt Lydia's Denim Quick Crochet. You can find it at most Wal-Mart's, Jo-Ann's, or your local craft store, probably with or near the crochet thread.
