MATERIALS: Mercerized knitting and crochet cotton, 8 250-yard balls ecru. Steel crochet hook No. 8.
GAUGE: One motif = 3"

FIRST MOTIF: Ch 6, sl st in first ch to form ring.
RND 1: Ch 2; holding back on hook last lp of each dc, 2 dc in ring, yo and through all 3 lps on hook (cluster made); * ch 4; holding back on hook last lp of each dc, 3 dc in ring, yo and through all 4 lps on hook (cluster made), repeat from * 4 times, ch 2, dc in tip of first cluster.
RND 2: * Ch 6, sc in next ch-4 lp, repeat from * 4 times, ch 6, sl st in in top of dc.
RND 3: In each ch-6 lp make sc, hdc, 7 dc, hdc, sc.
RND 4: Sl st in sc, sl st in hdc, sl st in in each of next 2 dc, * sc in 3rd dc of 7-dc group, ch 3, sk 1 dc, sc in 5th dc, ch 7, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc.
RND 5: Sl st in first ch-3 sp, sc in same sp, * ch 6, 5 tr in 4th ch of next ch 7, ch 6, sc in next ch-3 sp, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc.  End off.

SECOND MOTIF: Work as for first motif through rnd 4.
RND 5: Sl st in first ch-3 sp, sc in same sp, ch 6, holding first motif in back of 2nd motif, wrong sides tog, sl st in first tr of any group on first motif, tr in 4th ch of next ch 7, sl st in next tr on first motif, tr in same 4th ch of ch 7, continue to sl st in each tr on first motif before making tr on 2nd motif until 5 tr of first motif are joined to 5 tr on 2nd motif, ch 6, sc in next ch-3 sp, * ch 6, 5 tr in 4th ch of next ch 7, ch 6, sc in next ch-3 sp, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc.  End off.

Top Row: Work 20 motifs, joining each successive motif to previous motif directly opposite last joining.
Next Row: Work 19 motifs, joining first notif to first and 2nd motifs of top row, join 2nd motif to first motif, then to 2nd and 3rd motifs of top row.
        Continue in this manner, making 12 rows, having one less motif each row - 9 motifs in bottom row.

BORDER:
RND 1: Sc in center tr of any 5-tr group on edge, * ch 18, sc in center tr of next group, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc.
RND 2: Sl st in each of next 5 ch, sc in lp, * ch 10, sc in same lp, ch 10, sc in next lp, repeat from * around, end ch 5, dtr in first sc.
